PuNKin! Nu OOAK Halloween Barbie

The weather is perfect for apple and pumpkin picking. Apple cider, caramel popcorn, a good horror movie. Under the influence of such and intoxicating autumnal presence, I made a new recycled doll.

I call her PuNkIN! She has a kind of deathrock look done in wool locs. I hand-dyed them orange and green. The right side is shorn, buzzed like a mohawk.

PuNKin comes dressed in a handmade black skeletal gown which--unlike many OOAK horror dolls--is removable. The collar, however, is not and should you try to remove it her head will roll off and demons will pop out.

Made some matching sparkly black pumps, too.

Title: PuNKiN!
Mold: Barbie, Mattel, unknown doll with 3 studs, factory molded into her left ear.
Born: Sept 15, 2010
Doll artist: Byrdie
Favorite food: popcorn
Favorite song: Anything from the album Juju by Siouxsie and the Banshees

Indian and African Contemporary Fashion Dolls

I'm posting two gorgeous dolls I made a while ago, Pink Prachodayat and Cenye. Prachodayat, which means "enlighten"in Sanskrit, is the very last phrase chanted in many Vedic Mantras. She was the first girl I made with a broader global flare.

Except for the ceramic jar (which I embellished with a tassel handmade from thread) and Barbie's actual body, everything is 1000% handmade.  I even designed and cut the suatika pattern into a stamp, sized just right for the doll.  Pink Prachodayat has plenty of jewelry and embellishments. She was an organic creation which I'm proud of.

My second doll was Cenye, a Malian name for beauty. I rerooted her hair in plain wool, undyed for stark contrast and a bold shock.  Again, lush with little embellishments. Cowrie corset (which I want to make for myself), cowrie earrings, etc...

I also made the tiny stamps which I needed to print the bogolanfini (or mudcloth) pattern. I need to make more heavily embellished dolls!

Lady Gaga By Request

I'm not a huge pop music fan and find the industry lacking as far as the organic musical process is concerned. I haven't listened much to Lady Gaga but her outfits are exciting ventures for fashion doll designers. To me the costume is a synthesis of the Sorceress from Masters of the Universe (1987) and Björk's wintry white swan dress collection--although the last time Björk played Madison Square Garden she left it sweating rainbows.

Anyhow, here's Lady Gaga...in the Fantasy Flesh.

Pyrie, Greco-Roman Goddess

Pyrie004
Just finished Pyrie, a new custom Barbie remake. Her name is a derivative of pyr, Greek root word for fire, and one of the Furies.  She is a symbol of fire, passion, and harvest.  Aesthetically, I combined Greek and Roman motif with Victorian Romanticism.

This Teresa mold Barbie doll has been completely repainted and rerooted with hand dyed merino wool hair.  I made her outfit from scraps of cloth donated by Garment District boutiques. I also made Pyrie her own pyre stand with wreathed twigs.

The Most Kawaii

I really want a Toffee doll, now.  Distributed by Huckleberry Toys, Toffee is a new line of super kawaii Japanese dolls from designer Riri Fukuju.  These plush body mixed-media handmade dolls come in several designs (including the limited edition Hellboy Fan doll with awesome kitty cat eyes), all of them cute and some of them slightly sinister.  They're a more traditional alternative to Asian ball-jointed dolls, and, with their big baby-doll type heads and tiny bodies, are less anatomical and more whimsical.
Top row, L to R: Marina, Sakura, Hazel
Bottom row, L to R: Lily, VIctoria, Pinky

Riri (pronounced "Lily") Fukuju has a portfolio of fuzzy animals with smooth white faces and hauntingl little girls with vacant expressions.  If I had one, I'd make a stop motion film set in some Mark Ryden phantasy.  Speaking of films, let's not forget this year's Alice in Wonderland.  Here's a little Alice by Riri.

A New Day for Dolls

(Above) A bag of beheaded Barbies who chose death instead of cake.

Sunsinuray and I are putting our plastic childhood nostalgia to good use.  We're making OOAK (one of a kind) fashion doll remakes.  Barbie repaints are nothing new.  You can bid on dozens of creations at eBay.com in the OOAK Barbie category and google some awesome original Barbie OOAK dolls made within the last two decades.  Everyone has their ideal vision of what the iconic plastic model should look like.

A work in progress.  I will probably name her something involving Greek goddesses, blood, and/or passion.  Reroot in hand-dyed merino wool.
